Dow Loses Ground Again

BREAKING NEWS: The Dow lost 127 points

BEHIND THE NEWS: Another closing in the red for the Dow. This is the 11th closing the Dow has been in negative in 13 days. Not good. For most of the day, the Dow was in the positive until the dreaded last 20 minutes. This is the time when the Dow bottoms out. I believe we still have more of these days to surpass until there is a change.

Dow Closes Up

BREAKING NEWS: The Dow closed up 401 points

BEHIND THE NEWS: Today was a good day on Wall Street as the Dow Jones Industrial posted its second positive close in the month of October. The news is positive, but a recession might still be around the corner with the possibility of already being in one. The best thing to do is to stay informed and not pull out of your 401K unless you need your money in the less than 10 years.

Dow Tumbles AGAIN

BREAKING NEWS: The Dow tumbles 734 points

BEHIND THE NEWS: Another horrible day on Wall Street today. Stocks plummeted today to 734 points making it the second time ever that the markets falls 700 points (September 29 – 778 points). News of a recession played a part in the market tumbling so low.

Since that awful day on the 29th of September, this crisis has re-written the record books in the wrong way. We currently own the 1,2,6,7,8 place on the top 10 worst one day point drop ever. Before the crisis, the last entry into the top 10 was in February 2007 when the market dropped 416 points. Also, today the market dropped 7.87% placing that in the top 10 worst one day percentage drop ever.

IMF Warns Of Meltdown

The International Monetary Fund warned today that the global market is on the brink of a financial meltdown. This comes on the day that President Bush and the G7 financial ministers met to discuss the crisis in Washington. The IMF head warns that the global market could crash another 20% before we see a positive turn. Here is a brief description of the function of the IMF:

The IMF manages the world's financial systems, primarily by implementing the policies of its 185 member-countries, in particular exchange rates between countries and how payments flow between countries.

What would another 20% drop mean for the Dow? Considering that last week the stock market had it worst week ever, it could get nasty. The Dow closed at 8,451.19 points on Friday. A 20% drop from this figure would mean that the Dow would have to lose another 1,690.26 points leaving the Dow at 6,760.92 !! If the Dow would to close at that figure, hypothetically speaking, the Dow would be at it's lowest point since April 1997.

Also, we have not had a positive gain of the Dow in the month of October (8 days). During the month, the Dow has lost 2,728.33 points (25.14%) !! That is an average drop per day of 341 points. That is incredible. At this pace, we will dip below 3,700 points by the end of the month. We have gone from 10,831.07 points to 8,451.19 points this month.

I hope these figures are way over blown and do not come true. Considering how the market has behaved in the last week, anything is possible.

AIG Spends $440,000 After Bailout Loan

As if the financial crisis we are all going through isn't enough to endure, we find out that after AIG received the $85 billion loan given to them by the federal government, money was spent on luxurious amenities. According to a receipt from the St. Regis Hotel, AIG held an 8 day company retreat. Here is the break down of the spending:

  1. Hotel Rooms - $139,000
  2. Banquets - $147,301
  3. Spa Treatments - $23,380
  4. Golf - $6,939
  5. Room Service, Food, and Cocktails - $9,980

The above total is $442,000. All of this occured about a week after receiving the $85 billion loan. AIG issued a statement last week saying, "This type of gathering is standard practice in the industry and was planned a year advance of the Federal Reserve's loan to AIG. We recognize, however, that even activities that have long been considered standard practice may be perceived negatively. As a result, we are reevaluating various aspects of our operations in light of the new times in which we operate."

Here is an excerpt from the article:

The statement also mentions that the event was held by a AIG subsidiary, not by AIG employees. The attendees were independent life insurance agents who were "top business producers" for AIG. Only about 10% of the attendees were AIG American General employees, and no corporate executives from AIG headquarters attended the meeting, according to the statement. But the question still remains, couldn't these "independent" life insurance agents have scaled their activities back a bit in light of the company's bailout?

These are the kind of inconsideration that played a part of getting us to where we are today and it needs to be mentioned.

Dow Down Again

BREAKING NEWS: Dow is down again

BEHIND THE NEWS: Considering the Dow was down as low as 700 points earlier today, it only dropped 128 points. I believe this is the 7th or 8th day that the Dow finishes in the negative. I know that the drop was not as much as the other days, but a negative is still a negative.

UPDATE: Dow Suffers Another Heart-break

The Dow is on the verge of jumping off the edge and committing suicide. It is a unanimous that this is the worst financial crisis we have seen since the Great Depression. It closed down 679 points (3rd worst ever) at 8,579 points. It has lost more than 2,000 points in the last 7 days and 5,000 points since the crisis began, but experts optimistic that these declines don’t last too long. Soon the market will start gaining again and build a foundation for the future. From his mouth to God’s ears !!!!

BREAKING NEWS: The Dow is down 354 points as of 3:30 pm

O.J. Simpson Found Guilty

BREAKING NEWS: O.J. Simpson was found guilty last night on 12 counts including armed robbery and kidnapping.

BEHIND THE NEWS: O.J. Simpson and his co-defendant, Clarence "CJ" Stewart can spend the rest of their lives in jail when the sentencing is handed down on December 5. The verdict was reached 13 years to the day he was aquitted of killing Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

On September 13, 2007, Simpson and four others stormed into a hotel room in Las Vegas trying to recover memorabilia that allegedly belonged to OJ. The victims said that two of the 4 brought guns. OJ and his accomplices took the memorabilia from the room that night and left.

Here is some insight of that night I learned from reading the book "How I Helped O.J. Get Away With Murder: The Shocking Inside Story of Violence, Loyalty, Regret and Remorse" written by Mike Gilbert. He was OJ's former manager of 20+ years. Gilbert had in his possession the memorabilia that was taken from the hotel room that night in September. He helped OJ hide it from the the feds when he lost his civil lawsuit because it was going to go to the Goldman's. Gilbert hid the memorabilia in multiple storages with OJ's approval and consent. There was a particular storage that was owned by Gilbert with a friend of his, Alfred Beardsley. He is one of the guys in the hotel room that night. One day, the storage company tried contacting Gilbert and he could not be reached. Instead they contacted Beardsley since his name is on the contract. Beardsley opened the storage and took the memorabilia from the storage and that is how he got the stuff that OJ wanted.

Something that was taken that night was the suit OJ wore when he was aquitted in 1995. That suit was given to Mike Gilbert by OJ Simpson at the request of Gilbert.

Historic VP Debate Last Night

VS

For those who watched the only VP debate last night, you were part of history. The debate had 70 million viewers making it the most watched VP debate ever. Below are a few quotes from last night with the correct information. It is important for us to know the real information instead of the one the politicians want us to believe.

BIDEN: Warned that Republican presidential candidate John McCain's $5,000 tax credit to help families buy health coverage "will go straight to the insurance company."

THE FACTS: Of course it would, because it's meant to pay for insurance. That's like saying money for a car loan will go straight to the car dealer.
PALIN: Said of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama: "94 times he voted to increase taxes or not support a tax reduction."

THE FACTS: The dubious count includes repetitive votes as well as votes to cut taxes for the middle class while raising them on the rich. An analysis by factcheck.org found that 23 of the votes were for measures that would have produced no tax increase at all, seven were in favor of measures that would have lowered taxes for many, 11 would have increased taxes on only those making more than $1 million a year.

The Market Is Struggling

As we all know, the market overall had a bad week and is struggling. Below are a few numbers to prove it:
The Dow Jones lost 818 points this week making it the biggest weekly point loss in seven years and the third biggest weekly loss ever.

The S&P lost 114 points, making it the worst weekly point loss in seven years and the third biggest weekly loss ever.

The NASDAQ lost 10.8% making it the worst % loss in seven years and fifth worst ever.

Hopefully, with the newly approved bailout bill, our economy will begin to show signs of life and come out of the hole we are currently in.

Houses Passes Revised Bailout Bill

BREAKING NEWS:
The House has passed the bailout bill already approved by the Senate on Wednesday by a vote of 263 - 171.

BEHIND THE NEWS: With the passing of the bill, President Bush has signed the bill allowing the U.S. Treasury to receive $700 billion over the next few years to purchase troubled mortgage. Only $250 billion is released immediately.

Senate Accepts Revised Bailout

BREAKING NEWS: The Senate passes, by a vote of 74-25, the revised bailout plan that the House vetoed on Monday.

BEHIND THE NEWS: Within the new bailout plan, the Senate has asked for the FDIC to increase the cap from $100,000 to $250,000 in hope of attracting more customers to banks. This new plan now has to be agreed upon by the House and that vote will take place on Friday. From what I understand, this bill has to pass "as is". No change can be made because the Senate has voted.

I am praying for the best, but I am not optomistic about the vote on Friday. They turned down the first bailout plan, but this one has what they call "Christmas Ornaments" attached to it. Hopefully, they will sway some of those, two-thirds of the Republicans, who voted Nay to vote Yes on Friday.

Items Found Belonging To Steve Fossett

BREAKING NEWS: Hikers have found personal items belonging to Steve Fossett in a rugged region in California.

BEHIND THE NEWS: Fossett disappeared on September 3, 2007 when he took off in a single engine plane from a Nevada ranch owned by Baron Hilton. The search went on until October 2, 2007, but he was not declared officially dead until February 15, 2008 at the request of his wife's petition made on November 26, 2007. The reason for the request was to start the proper procedures needed to resolve his estate.

Seems kind of "fast moving" is you ask me, but now back to the news.

Fossett was a world record holder in balloons, sailboats, gliders, and powered aircrafts. He is known as being the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon (hot air). In 2005, Fossett made the first solo nonstop and unrefueled circumnavigation of the world in 67 hours on a single engine jet aircraft. In total, Fossett set 116 records in five different sports, 60 of which still stand.

Hopefully, good news will come out of all of this when it's all done. I hope for the best.
